Designing Francine River’s gift edition of A Lineage of Grace

Having the honor to re-design Francine River’s A Lineage of Grace as a gift edition was total joy, as I loved reading the fictionalized stories of the five women in the lineage of Christ. Francine makes them come to life as you enter into their culture, which is so unlike ours. Designing the cover was also like coming full circle for me, as I designed the original set of novellas.

In developing the new gift edition, the Tyndale House Publishers fiction committee decided to create a classic package for these novellas, since this story is historical fiction and will be around for generations to come.

While brainstorming the concept for the new cover, I made a word list, which included the following: connection, intertwining, rooted, faith, beauty, feminine, family tree, grace, and unlikely stories. I also thought a lot about the prophecy in Isaiah 11:1 “Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.” I thought about how God chose to redeem these different women in such a powerful way, that changed all of history. I thought about how He meets us in our brokenness to build something strong and beautiful, for His glory.

I went back to those original novella covers and thought about the string I used to show their connection. The 5 knots represented the 5 women’s lives and how they became threaded together. The knot was a landmark of their spot in the lineage of Christ. It was their mark on the world.

I also did a ton of research, looking at old, vintage books and was so inspired by the intricacies and elegance of the foil stamping, as well as the simplicity of the typography.

In thinking through color, I wanted to use either red to represent the blood line of Jesus Christ or purple to represent His royalty. We ended up using purple, since Francine’s gift edition of Redeeming Love uses crimson red.

Then, I started sketching.

Since my sketches looked like a child’s drawing, I immediately turned to one of Tyndale’s in-house artists, Lindsey Bergsma, who is gifted at both hand lettering and illustration. I had her develop three concepts: the tree, a classic interwoven look, and a more contemporary hand lettered style.

In the end, we stuck with the tree, as we all loved the symbolism of the family tree that the women are a part of. As you can see, Lindsey’s final tree is different from where we started. Her first tree looked more fairy-tale-like, and since this is serious, historical fiction, we wanted the tree to have more substance, while remaining elegant. We moved Francine’s name out of the branches & placed them in the roots because Francine actually wanted less emphasis on her byline! {What New York Times best selling author wants her name smaller?!!! She is the real deal, people!} In the final art, there are 5 flowers in the branches, symbolizing the 5 women, which harkens back to the original novellas having the 5 knots on the cover. Both the branches and the roots are always intertwining, as I really wanted to emphasize how God wove the lives of the five women in the lineage of Christ in such a beautiful way.

Lindsey painstakingly and meticulously developed the art to be perfectly balanced and yet have movement and asymmetry to create an organic look. She created a grid and sketched (over & over) the roots and the branches, always being mindful where the lines would overlap. Then, she scanned in her sketches, cleaned them up in photoshop, and took the art into Illustrator where she re-drew the entire piece as vector art. Without her creativity, this cover would not be what it is today & I am so thankful for her!

I could not be happier with the final result, and I pray this book encourages other women, as it has encouraged me!

Adoption Art inspired by Ephesians 1 {Behind the Scenes with Life Verse Design}

Adoption-Photo-Ephesians1_0001

Ephesians 1:4-6 is such a rich passage, full of love, hope and grace:

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

I originally created this art for my amazing friend Amy. And, when I say “amazing”, I whole-heartedly mean it. Amy is someone whom I admire very much. She is wise, full of peace, strong, generous, and deeply rooted in Jesus. Amy’s life journey has brought her through more valleys than most of us will experience in a lifetime. But, week after week we have the joy of fellowshipping together and she continues to pour out her life to serve others and grow in her love for our Father. So, when Amy & her hubby brought home their second beautiful son, I wanted to create something really special for her family. {I mean — LOOK at that kid! Those eyes! LOVE.}

This month, my adoption “Chosen” piece is featured at 30% in any size and format. I also wanted to mention that during the month of May, I am donating a portion of all of my sales to The Sparrow Fund which is an adoption organization that supports and encourages families throughout their adoption journey.

Jeremiah 29:11 Scripture Art {Behind the Scenes}

Jeremiah-29-11-Photo_0001

FOR I KNOW THE PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU

declares the Lord

PLANS TO PROSPER YOU

AND NOT TO HARM YOU

PLANS TO GIVE YOU HOPE AND A FUTURE

{Jeremiah 29:11}

While creating this piece of Scripture art, I thought a lot about God’s goodness and love. I meditated on the fact that He DOES have a plan for our life, and most of all He longs to be a part of our daily life. Over and over in the Old Testament, God declares things like, “If only my people would acknowledge me. If only they would turn their faces towards me. If only they would come to me…” A lot of times people use this verse as a hopeful promise, which it is — it makes a great graduation gift or gift of encouragement for someone who needs to have hope for their future. But, I do not think this promise in Scripture equates to materially prosperity. Nor does it mean we will not have troubles or trials or hardship in our life. I am currently studying Romans and would like to cross reference Romans 5:1-5:

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;  perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

I think our secure hope and prosperous future lies in our spiritual life. The biggest plan God has for each of us is to know His great love for us which is found in Jesus Christ our Lord.

My Jeremiah 29:11 Scripture Art is on sale for the month of May at 30% off any size or color.

May you walk in His plan for your life and experience His peace and joy as you follow Jesus!

Firefighter Art {Behind the Scenes}

Fireman-Gift-Photo_0001

{Firefighter art is available HERE}

Today I wanted to share with you the “behind the scenes” artistic process of my firefighter art. This piece is near & dear to my heart, as I originally created it not to sell at all, but simply as a gift for my father who is a retired lieutenant of the Rockford fire department. That is his helmet in my photo, as well as a piece of hose he normally hangs on “the fire wall” in my parents’ house.

Fireman-Gift-Photo_0002

Firefighting runs deep in my blood. My family uniquely contains 3 generations of firefighters: my grandfather, father & now brother who is active on the force. I grew up loving to visit my dad at the station, sliding down the pole, hopping in the truck, and gleefully covering my ears while the sirens wailed. I also heard countless stories around the dinner table of the thrills of firefighting, some of which would make me put my fork down & say, “Enough!”

Fireman-Gift-Photo_0003

{talk about a throwback! My Favorite Little Mister visiting Grandpa at the fire station!}

I created this piece for my dad’s birthday. As I researched quotes, most often the firefighter’s prayer would pop up in search engines, but I did not want to use something so common. Then, I came across this quote from Chief Edward Crocker who was the fire chief of New York City in 1910 and something moved in my heart, knowing THIS is the quote. You see, every firefighter I know believes their work is so much more than a “job”… it is their calling. They live it, breathe it, and quite literally sacrifice their lives for it. Here is Chief Crocker’s famous quote:

I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the fireman has to do believe that his is a noble calling. Our proudest moment is to save lives. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even of supreme sacrifice.

When I gave my art to my father, he cried. When I gave it to my brother, he cried too. I know their hearts of service. I know how meaningful it is to be appreciated and honored, something the unsung hero does not often receive.

Recently a firefighter from Texas purchased my canvas

& this is the note he sent me after receiving the art:

When I first saw this piece of art it really stirred up a lot of old feelings I had about being in the Fire Service, and as I look at it now hanging on my wall between two of my old helmets, I can’t help but feel extremely proud about my chosen profession.

But at the same time, I am also extremely humbled that you have honored all of us in the Fire Service this way, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to you for this wonderful and heart-touching expression of love that you originally made for your own family of firemen, but have also made it available to firefighters everywhere.

I am so grateful to be a small part in encouraging such a profession! Now thru the end of April, the firefighter art is 30% off as I hope you too will touch the firefighter in YOUR life. {And, we all know how every firefighter likes to decorate with fire stuff!}
